While We Still Can
Local, young and bursting with ideas: on a mission to inherit a less broken planet
We’re a dynamic, energised group of young people in West Somerset capable of addressing climate and ecological destruction, and all the feelings that arise because of this destruction.
We harness creativity as a means to speak up and take action.
Supported by experts, we think big but act locally.

Down To Zero
Pop-up shop project in Porlock
Our pop-up shop on Porlock High Street opened for six weeks in late 2023 filled with 350 pieces of single use plastic with the goal of removing one piece of plastic for every pledge received.
Each pledge represented a personal promise to commit to a small sustainable lifestyle change. The shop window total-o-meter clearly showed our community how we were getting on. On our final day of opening, we reached our target with an hour to spare - the shop officially became “plastic free”!
We believe tipping points matter: with 350 pledges made, over 50% of Porlock’s households had engaged with us.
Thank you to everyone who came in!

“It’s a really unusual shop, because rather than leaving with a product you leave with a promise you hope to keep instead.”

Down To Zero on tour
Following the success of our Porlock pop-up shop, we are now taking Down To Zero on the road. We’ll be at the Exmoor Festival of Nature on 25 May, World Ocean Day Festival on Minehead seafront on 8 June and Minehead Bay Festival on 31 August 2024.
At these events the total-o-meter will be set to 100. Let’s see if we can get 100 pledges in one day!
Pledging is simple - we have a list of small changes you can make to your habits such as committing to spend £10/week on your local high street, growing your own windowsill herbs/salad to avoid plastic-wrapped supermarket fare or bringing a reusable tote bag on shopping trips.
